As an individual investor, I found this book to be a fantastic guide for assessing the quality and valuation of a business. I found the author's in-depth coverage of investment metrics especially useful. Like many investors, I was familiar with common metrics like P/E and how it relates to valuations. This book covers metrics and terms that I was less familiar with, including ROTCE, EV/EBIT and margin of safety.For each of the 20 investments, the author provides the pieces of information that Buffet would have had at the time of his investment, including financial statements, market/industry context and management team background. The chapters covering Geico, Amex, General Re and Coke were especially interesting to read. The provided information, along with the author's analysis of the valuation metrics makes it clear to imagine how Buffet would have evaluated each of the investments.Overall, this is a great investing guide to add to one's collection.

If you’re looking for a book that will tell you the story behind the man Warren Buffett and his personal life, then this is not the book for you. But if you are an investor or want a book that provides lots of great primary source material and focuses on business and financial rationale behind Buffett’s investments, then this is a great book for you.This book takes twenty of Buffett’s most important and impactful investments and uses a wealth of quantitative data and historical information to really build and provide context for each case. From there, the book accurate analyzes each company/investment using current and established metrics (EV/EBITA, PER, etc) and illustrates what made each investment sound in a quantifiable way. You get to see the outcomes for each of these investments and, while each individual case was certainly interesting (my personal favorite was Coca-Cola), the twenty cases together provide great insight into Buffett’s investment strategies and priorities.The books pulls from source material that isn’t really covered by the host of other Buffett books out there, so it provides some new information and insights you probably won’t find elsewhere. Also, if you read this book you’ll find that it also isn’t just a rehash of Buffett’s annual letters talking about his investing philosophy. Instead, it provides the type of quantitative analysis using techniques and metrics relevant to today’s investors to help define and illustrate those principles in action. On its own, it’s already a great resource, but the book really helps give me context and a deeper understanding of the knowledge I already have.Finally, I really like that this book was honest when it comes to presenting its goals as well as its limitations. The book sets out to paint a realistic picture of the context for each case and analyze the most important factors for each case, while allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions, and it does exactly that. There are plenty of annual reports, balance sheets, market data, and other primary sources filled with information, and the analysis leaves just enough room for me interpret the findings and lessons in my own way. I found this much more satisfying to read than a few other books which try to establish themselves as the absolute authority.Overall, while this book was filled with data and graphs, it was a surprisingly easy and pleasant read and provided a lot of great insight and perspective. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Buffett’s investments.

This is Must Read for anyone who wants to put Buffett's investment secret source, which is quiet a bit philosophical in some sense, into Real Investing. Following Buffett's real investment examples while tracing back his thoughts and decision making under his unique personal circumstance at each stage was extremely helpful and insightful to me. Lots of Buffet books I read just focus on (1) how to understand his investment philosophy, his values and beliefs and (2) investment results. There has always been a big disconnection between (1) and (2). And many investment examples in the book (with lots of dramatic moments - Buffett's contrarian thinking, very fun to read) basically beautifully filled the gap. Also I like the overall writing style - clear and easy to read and offering lots of fun while navigating through each example. Strongly recommended.

As the Chinese translator for this book, i do not like it very much. There are a few scientific mistakes in it. For example, the author confused "moss" and "lichen" in one chapter, and in the other chapter the explanation about why ice floats on water is wrong. i have persuaded my cousins not to buy my translated version for their kids although i really did try to rectify these mistakes or even provide a re-written version for some parts while translating.Good part about this book is that it is a fairly nice instruction to explore the nature around in different seasons and encouraged the children to gather samples, isolate specimens, look up species in field guides, and make good notes.

Nature in a Nutshell is a handy book for parents who want to inject some educational experiences in their child's daily learning routine. The book contains one- hundred and twelve total activities relating to nature and education and most of them can be performed quickly and easily, using items available inside or immediately outside of most homes.The activities offered in the book are mostly simple and there are few materials necessary. Some activities are more complex, but most are basic and can be completed in a matter of minutes. The activities are divided up based on season and while this is a good way to organize, I think it would be better to organize based on difficulty level: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. This way, parents could slowly build up, from the easy to the more challenging, and increase their child's learning and confidence in the process.The book is recommended for children between the ages of eight and twelve, but I don't see why parents would want to wait this long to introduce their children to these learning activities. Younger children, in the four to eight age group, will enjoy the activities also. All you get is the name of the organization, the address of the organization's headquarters, and its phone number. A little research confirms the reason: The book was published in 1995. That explains the lack of web sites, but the publisher still deserves a small amount of criticism for not offering an updated version of the book in such a long period of time.Nature offers much to learn about and Nature in a Nutshell for Kids is a very good guide for young children who are eager to learn more about the world around them and parents who want to encourage education. The activities in this book are generally quick and simple and they all offer an important lesson about the natural world. Don't wait until your child reaches elementary school age- introduce your young boy or girl to the activities in this guide at the preschool level, and provide them a jump- start toward a life of education that will improve knowledge and instill the love of learning at a young age.

Lots of great projects for kids to try. I love that the projects are broken out by season. We will start with winter projects and work our way through the seasons. My 7 year old daughter got this as a Christmas gift and is very excited to try everything today. We homeschool and will use the book for fun projects

As Rick Steves recommends, I read this book in full before the trip. It really wasn't very helpful, as some important information for planning was missing or flat out wrong.For instance, when you are planning your days, it is helpful to have accurate information about which museums are closed on Mondays. He failed to mention that there are many museums offering free admission on Wednesdays. That's a big miss if you are budget traveler, or just a smart one. Although "updated" In January of 2014, he spends considerable time on the Danish Resistance Museum, which sounded fascinating. Trouble is, the fact that is was burned down in arson in 2013 makes it pointless to get excited about. I think more people would enjoy, or wish to see, the Danish Jewish Museum if he had mentioned that the architect is Daniel Libeskind, who also designed the new One World Trade Center.Speaking of Danish design, he misses all mention of the Little Mermaid's "ugly sister," designed by Bjørn Nørgaard, of interest because he also designed the new tapestries in Christiansborg Palace (2000) and is designing the Queen's sarcophagus for her (none too soon) future home in Roskilde. He doesn't mention Geroge Jensen when he speaks of shopping. Considering the reputation of Danish deisgn, I think these are big oversights.I recognize that a "snapshot" can not include everything. These are just some examples of big misses in this book.Rick Steves does have good humor, I will give him that. But you need a little more than the fair share of good humor to travel with him.I'm also not going to recommend a digital guidebook. It's handy if you are traveling to many places and want to save space in your bags. But I am pretty good with digital books and finding what I need in them. I have been trying digital guide books for several trips over the last few years, and I think this has put me over the edge. I'm done.

I have always found Rick Steves’ (RS) guides very detailed and informative and this is no exception. This publication is the 2013 Edition and is an excerpt from RS Scandinavia. This extremely concise and well organized work has had 10 editions and is very smooth to read and understand. From my recollection of Denmark this guide is very complete. If you have the RS DVD of Copenhagen, this publication is much more complete and is a great reference to have with you as you walk around Copenhagen.The first 90 pages concern Copenhagen, while the remainder of the book is about the surrounding area to Copenhagen which mirrors my planned week bicycle adventure. The last section entitled Practicalities has many helpful tips for travel in Denmark. Now that I have read this guide and viewed it’s analogues of the two RS DVDs on this subject, I’ve concluded the guide is more complete. My recommendation is to get the guide vs. the DVD due to portability. This guide is not perfect, but it is close.

We have bought and used several of the Rick Stevens Travel books and found them all very complete, easy to read and use. Wish he would do one of Israel.

I have always enjoyed Rick's honest appraisal of what is good and what is not about places he has visited. We have found his advice valuable and well worth the price. I appreciate his honest opinions on what is worth seeing and what is worth avoiding in European cities.We will be cyling in Copenhagen this summer, so this will be another excellent opportunity to take advantage of his advice (and for the price of admission on this one, it should be extremely good money invested in getting the most out of our trip.

good travel book for when you are in country. We haven't traveled there yet, but when we do this book is coming with us. We've used Many Rick Steves books when we've traveled on our own- they've always been great. FWIW we've traveled with his tour groups and never been disappointed. We cannot recommend his books or tours more highly. Do it.

This review is for the 2012 Rick Steves' Snapshot: Copenhagen & the Best of Denmark.The 2012 version is outdated in some regards, even when it was hot off the press. This guidebook is useful for Copenhagen, but I recommend you turn elsewhere for the highlights of the rest of Denmark.You may need to check out newer versions of this book.

We went to Copenhagen earlier this month. Only a small portion of the book was useful as we only stayed overnight for one night.We stayed about 40 miles north and drove into Copenhagen for a day. Tivoli Gardens was way over crowded this particular night because of a concert by LCO. I would recommend the book if you are staying in Copenhagen for a few days.

This guide is excellent in giving a traveler to this area information to help in visiting this country. It is focused on a limited amount of information so a traveler can not be overwhelmed with information.
