I bought this book along with "Eagle V6" by Mitchell Duncan. You can read my review on that book as it also applies to this book. Basically, Simon Monk's book, along with Eagle V6 by Mitchell Duncan are the only two books you need to learn and use Eagle. Each book separately lacks certain information, but together they include everything you'll need for tutorial and reference purposes.
It's ok if your just getting started with Eaglecad (like me). But here's the deal. At first Eaglecad seems pretty intimidating as it's loaded with stuff - easy to get overwhelmed. But once you get going (after a good say 20 hrs with it), it's actually easy to use albeit the user interface is a wonderful case study on how not to design software. In a word just crap, it's obvious the designed have never studied Human Factors, or just ignored them and did their own ungodly mess of an interface, but I digress. Humans are an amazing bunch, even with piss poor user interfaces, we adapt and get with the program. Now back to the book: it's well written, easily understandable and will definitely get the new person up and running. My only complaint - and it's minor - is that it just doesn't cover in detail other ways of doing tasks, only one way. But like i said in 20 hrs you will need to learn other techniques. For example, Mr. Monk does a nice job of explaining ground pours. However, what if I have a mixed dual layer board with components on both sides of the board. You don't need a PhD in Physics to see the described technique isn't going to work. So, what's the work around? Nice follow up with be "Advanced EagleCad....". I would recommend the book for it's cost clarity of writing, worth a read.
Hobby level information in PC board design using Autodesk Eagle design freeware. Plenty enough informationto get you on your way using the software. Still mentions ferric acid etchant instead of the greener pool acid/ peroxide mixture. Old book passed through many hands and replaced - still good information. Can design a fair sized two sided board with the freeware. Applicable to several software formats and gives a good familiarity with the terms of PC board layout and design. Out grown fast, but still good basics.
There will come a time in your life when you want to take your projects off a breadboard or stripboard and onto a real PCB. It is true that there are many videos on how to do this however sometimes you need a guide that explains what you need to use, do, and in what order to do it to turn a schematic into a PCB. This book does exactly that. After running through the example projects you will be able to create through-hole and SMD boards and have the files to send off for manufacturing. Simon's writing style is relaxed and easy to read, for the hobbyist or interested beginner. Don't waste your time hunting around for free guides or piecing together information from multiple websites or listening to awful YouTube videos - just buy this book and start making.
If you want to design your own PCBs on EAGLE, this is the book to read. Follow it carefully, and you will be able to produce very useful PCB designs for eventual fabrication. In my view, given EAGLE's capabilities, there is no reason to etch your own boards anymore. This book shows everything that you need to know and steers you away from some common pitfalls.
This book is about learning to use Eagle from start to a finished pcb product. The finished product covers making your own pcb. For me, after putting in so much effort in design, testing, pcb production I would rather send it out to a pro fabrication facility and have them make my board. I gave it only 3 stars because it lacked real world tips and techniques in sending to a fab facility, its outdated. Overall, I still highly recomend this book. It literaly takes you from install of Eagle to a finished PCB. If you need a book on Eagle get this book! It will give you a good understanding of Eagle and most importantly walks you through a good workflow practice. You will not be an expert with this book but you will more confident on your way to be one. Get the Eagle reference book, its free to download from the Eagle web page and use Youtube to clear any confusion.
There is a lot of good information here. However, it is for rev 7 and rev 9.1+ is currently available. Sometimes hard to get past the differences in the Eagle revs.
This book is much more that a tutorial on how to use Eagle. It contains all of the nitty gritty details needed to take you from zero to a finished board in a couple of days. With all of the really good YouTube tutorials out there I hesitated to buy yet another book that was likely to gather dust on the bookshelf but I found myself constantly reaching for this when ever I had a question and I usually found the answer. My first boards came out perfect.Dr. Monk has several other books that I am now considering.
