About the Author

David Lehman, the series editor of The Best American Poetry, is also the editor of the Oxford Book of American Poetry. His books of poetry include Poems in the Manner Of, New and Selected Poems, Yeshiva Boys, When a Woman Loves a Man, and The Daily Mirror. He lives in New York City and Ithaca, New York.Dana Gioia is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning poet. Former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Gioia is a native Californian of Italian and Mexican descent. He received a B.A. and a M.B.A. from Stanford University and an M.A. in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. He won the 2018 Poets' Prize for his collection 99 Poems: New and Selected. Gioia currently serves as the Poet Laureate of California, teaches at the University of Southern California, and has written five volumes of poetry, as well as the influential essay collection Can Poetry Matter?

First, a little about me: I write poetry regularly and have had several of my poems selected for publication. I've taken classes at a local writer's center, and after years of reading and writing poems, I'd like to think that I know what's good and what isn't so good.To call this series "The Best American Poetry" is a claim I always considered too audacious for it's own good. It sets up some serious expectations for the reader when it's probably more accurate to call it a good cross-section of modern American poetry.There are some real gems in this collection. There are a lot of so-so poems, and some poems in which I scratch my head and wonder what criteria was used to judge them worthy of inclusion in this collection. Overall, there is probably something for everyone.One of the values of this anthology is that it can be used as a litmus test to judge trends in American poetry. After a hiatus of being considered archaic, meter and rhyme have returned, although not in an overbearing fashion. And poets are aspiring to make poetry that is accessible to readers, even readers who wouldn't normally read poetry. Both of these trends are absolutely welcome. The long, cold winter of praise for inaccessible poetry nearly killed American poetry, creating an art form that almost no one (including poets) could tolerate.Poetry is back, hopefully in a big way. Is this the best of the best? It's not really that, and most readers would do well to ignore the claims of the series in this regard. Is it worth the price tag? It is, even if you don't think you like poetry.

I've read every volume in this noted anthology series -- this 2018 volume is my favorite. Many, many thanks to Dana Gioia for an outstanding collection.
