This is not a book for the inexperienced woodworker I think, but the inexperienced boat builder can learn from it anyway. The book was written in 1915 or 16 as, "a practical course in wooden ship building " for experienced mechanics..That is for experienced wood wrights and carpenters from other industries, who would be (they didn't know it yet) soon working in the nations "defense" industry building armed wooden freighters and troop transports for the coming US "involvement" in WW1 ..But none of that comes into the book much , except briefly in the forward....Remember its a "practical course".. And so it is .It covers explicitly the "traditional" wooden ship construction methods , step by step from lofting ("the mold floor") and stem, stern and keel construction , to sawing and bending futtocks (ribs) to planking a very cool small boat (for which lines and offsets are given) and then subsequent lecture/chapters , (with pictures and illustrations) on applying these skills to large ship construction. A classic and required reading in any boat builders library

Great little book to explain wooden ship building to beginners working with a crew restoring a ninety year old, 65' wooden purse seiner.

The book was basically of no help.. It did not have the pictures and information I was looking for.

I really liked the actual construction techniques demonstrated in the book. There's actual design and construction methods shown in the book.
