Review
“Goldwyn zeros in on the delightfully sordid demimonde of 1890s downtown prostitution…in the familiar Joycean format of interconnected short stories, Goldwyn’s poetic and empathetic prose raises the raw, factual material to the level of tragicart, in passages of loneliness and desperation that burn off any distancing“nostalgia” for the old times.” (Tony Mostrom LA Weekly)Sporting Guide is a guidebook to the glamorous world of high-class brothels, madams, and prostitutes of 1890s Los Angeles…think Zagat, but just a tad more risqué, chronicling – rather than restaurants – the city’s brothels, gambling dens and houses of ill-fame. (The New Potato)“Liz Goldwyn’s writing and film-work merge the focused dedication of intellectual study with the brilliant and subversive storytelling tradition she grew up around…her book is filled with stories of vice set in pre-Hollywood L.A and follow the fictional tales of men and women affiliated with the sex industry” (Tierney Finster Vice)

The author obviously did an enormous amount of research as evidenced by the pictures she placed throughout her book. I read a lot and I totally disagree with all of the criticisms shown in the reviews. It was a fun read and while it took me a bit to get her flow once I did it took off. Maybe you harsh critics read a different book?I was so impressed with this young woman's writings that I just purchased her book on Burlesque. In my opinion she is an extraordinary researcher and writer. I hope she writes more because I am a fan.
The Sporting Life was great fun, we've been needing a book about early LA brothel's in the late 1800's as part of the picture of early LA life. It's a fascinating book, some of it is factual, most of it, and some was fictionalized but all of it based on actual accounts.
Dense and well researched, this is a great novel about an era that hasn’t been well-documented. Well written and beautifully produced, this is an important book.
This book was an interesting and short read. I finished it in a day. The book is comprised of several short stories about different people and they are intertwined. I enjoyed this book and the pictures. I would recommend this book to others.
I really enjoyed the historical aspects of this book. I would have been happier with more story content to go along with all the interesting pictures and photographs from the time period.
I wanted to know out LA at the turn of the century. This did not give me wht I hope for.
Some very interesting info about how the city was run in the past, but was disappointed in the characters. It seemed like the author didn't love them. I wanted to know more about some of them, like how their stories continue, but they just kind of got cut off and on to the next short story.
Not my favorite, but I didn't hate it. Left me with more questions than answers.
